Featured Renter, Meet Tilden!

When did you start renting/lending from Style Lend and why?

I started renting/lending from Style Lend last summer (2014) and have been obsessed with it ever since. As a blogger, I absolutely love the concept of renting designer RTW pieces for those more laid back events and blog photos. It makes the idea of playing dress up more mature and realistic to participate in for someone blogging as a business.

Shopping habits (do you shop online, flash sales, in person, etc.)

With my crazy schedule, shopping online is 10x easier but I do get hesitant from buying outside my brand comfort zone – the sites I know will fit. If they don’t offer free returns, I usually abandon my shopping cart. In person I feel more comfortable trying the pieces on, but styles are limited and practically everyone’s my size.. Basically shopping for me is either a hit or miss, depending on the day, time and place I decide to shop.

Favorite brands/designers and why?

Retailers: Asos, Nasty Gal, Urban Outfitters, Zara, Top Shop, H&M, Club Monaco

Designers: Coach, Rebecca Minkoff, James Perse, Elizabeth & James, Vince

I love all these brands/designers because they best describe my style every season of the year, as well as stay reliable with sizing and pricing. I know what to expect when shopping from each of them and rarely disappointed in my picks (other than the occasional buyer’s remorse..)

What are your favorite things to do in NYC?

Brunching, without a doubt. It’s borderline a religious activity on both Saturday and Sunday where you get to indulge without criticism and people watch all at the same time. I honestly feel I understand the city I call home much better on weekends and fall in love with it all over again.

Can you tell us a little blurb about your background, job, and how long you’ve lived here?

I started my blog To Be Bright in January 2013 as a junior year in college with hopes to score a coveted fashion/retail public relations internship in NYC. As someone who was born and raised in NJ, the Big Apple is practically my second home and where I felt the most independent and secure while still having the comfort of home nearby. The goal was to get that internship that would lead to a job where I could secure that location of freedom & family – TBB would be the place where I show a little more about myself and my personality in a visual form, something a paper resume could never do.

I rode horses my entire life, competing nationally up and down the east coast since age 10 at a serious & competitive level. The University of South Carolina recruited me my senior year of high school to compete on its Division I NCAA Equestrian Team, which I did for the first two years of my college career. Fashion was always an interest but something I could never “get into” because I didn’t have the time for it. However, I made sure to always dress for class and took a lot of pride in the pieces I owned and kept in my closet.

When I resigned my position on the team to pursue other interests, I got involved blogging and soon becoming the online editor and PR director of our student magazine. It was then where I discovered my love for writing/sharing content as well as using social media to the best of my ability for a business, so to speak.

Feature_Tilden_MG_0790

So launching TBB was originally to share the work I did for the magazine, but it soon became the platform of my style and shopping habits. When I saw such a strong and positive feedback to my fashion-related posts, I decided to focus a bit more on that. It wasn’t until I was being asked to feature products and share my opinion on a broader spectrum that I realized I could make this a real business. Two and a half years later, To Be Bright is a fully-focused life & style blog that came to be in the most organic way possible – I couldn’t be happier with the direction my passion has taken me and I cant wait to see what the future holds for it.

Any little quirks?

Superstitious and I blame my dad for this one in the most appreciative way possible. He always made me think in an optimistic manner, work hard for the things I desire and stay hungry. That being said, he would consider certain moments and things to be considered “lucky” and to act upon them when appropriate to encourage a positive mindset. So if I catch the clock at 11:11 or see a penny heads up, a wish will be made and a coin will be picked up and pocketed. I also have a small habit of checking my zodiac app every morning, just to mentally prepare what may or may not happen to me that day…because you never really know.

What do you love most about being an influencer?

What I love most about being an influencer is the ability to help someone out with a dilemma, in the form of clothing or by a change of perspective. When someone comes up to me and compliments my blog or tells me that it’s helped her in some way, it makes me so happy to know what I’m putting out there is bettering another person. At the end of the day, that’s what I want my blog’s presence to represent.

How would you describe your style?

Transitional – as I’ve grown and documented my fashion timeline for the past two years, my style has been a direct reflection of who & where I am during that time in my life. Since college and moving into NYC, my style has become more structured, minimalistic yet thought-provoking enough to take a second glance, and thrifty nonetheless. I score at sample sales, online sales and discounted stores & consignment shops to balance the budget I need to stick to and the appearance I want to maintain. In a year from now, my style might be completely different in the way I shop and share but for right now, it’s representing the very place I’m in with my real life.Feature_Tilden_MG_0860

One thing that would be your “dream item” to rent on Style Lend?

Probably anything Chanel (duh) but honestly, a nice Louis Vuitton tote would be fun to carry around for a hot second – it’s been a secret wish of mine to get but I’m being patient with my indulging, for now.

Feature_Tilden_MG_0865

Why do you like the concept of renting vs. buying?

Renting is great because it’s an “in the moment” action that can satisfy a luxury need – like an event or photo – while not having to commit to the price and redeem the “payoff.” For someone on a strict budget but looking to expand her designer reach, Style Lend is the perfect platform for me to push my blog in the direction it needs to go without having to pay for the consequences, no pun intended, of sacrificing bills over a moment of style.

Impossibly Imperfect – Meet Ashley!

Launching a new city can be hard, but thankfully we meet people like the wonderful Ashley from Impossibly Imperfect. She has become one of our best renters and now a lender and we are excited to share more about her style.

When did you start renting/lending from Style Lend and why?

I was introduced to StyleLend over the summer! My first renting experience was when I got an invite to attend the Diner en Blanc party in NYC, it’s an all white party and I had nothing to wear as I do not own all white pieces. I searched and searched for an option and two days before the event I remembered Style Lend, I went to the app found the most perfect Reiss white jumpsuit, rented it and had it delivered within a few hours. The jumpsuit was spectacular on and the app saved me in a moment of fashion panic.

Shopping habits (do you shop online, flash sales, in person, etc.)

When it comes to my shopping habits I love to shop in person but most of the time I find it’s just easier to hit my go to e-comm sites like ASOS, Nasty Gal and Shopbop! Not to mention, they have a much wider selection!

Favorite brands/designers and why?

I have always been an avid supporter of smaller designers, hence the series that I do every so often called “Get in the Know” where I highlight a new designer. At the present, I am absolutely in love with Self Portrait! Everything he creates is simply lovely and the attention to the intricately beautiful detail truly makes his pieces special. Nonoo NY is a great up and coming designer who creates beautiful pieces with a bit of edge, I was obsessed with her rose gold mini dress this past spring! I’m also a huge fan of Jimmy Choo, Alexis, Zimmermann and For Love & Lemons! All gorgeous, very feminine brands!

What are your favorite things to do in NYC?

I’ve lived in NYC for quite some time now and one of my favorite things to these days is to pop my headphones in and wander the city. You never know what you’ll get yourself into! I’m also a big vintage shopper so doing some damage at the flea markets on the weekend is always a good time.

Feature_Ashley_MG_1564

Though when the weather is gorgeous during the springtime it’s always nice to picnic in one of the parks, you have to take advantage of the nice weather while you can!

Can you tell us a little blurb about your background, job, and how long you’ve lived here?

I was born and raised in a suburb outside of Dallas and went to college in Oklahoma so as soon as I graduated I flew myself out to NYC and found a job in PR at a huge agency.  I thought I’d be here for a few years and now eight years later I can’t imagine what life would be like anywhere else.

Any little quirks?

Haha there might be too many to share here! * Little secret, she is a sneaker lover 🙂

Feature_Ashley_MG_1520

What do you love most about being in PR?

I’ve always been a person who thrives in a fast paced environment. I like the constant change that comes with PR, it’s always something new and different no matter what brand I’m working on. One day I could be on set with Scott Foley for a bedding brand and the next watching Kevin Love and Eric Decker shoot hoops for one of my men’s brands.

How would you describe your style?

Constantly evolving!

One thing that would be your “dream item” to rent on Style Lend?

Such a hard question! I’d love to rent a couture gown from a big design house such as Chanel or Oscar de la Renta! A girl can dream right??

Why do you like the concept of renting vs. buying?

I live in a miniature apartment in NYC and while I love my life in that apartment it is lacking in closet space! I also am a person who likes to wear things once or twice so renting has allowed me to incorporate new pieces into my wardrobe without making a huge commitment to them being there permanently.

Meet our Newest StyleLender, Mary Dyann!

When did you start renting/lending from Style Lend and why?

Very recently! As a stylist, I often rent designer clothing from showrooms that cost anywhere from $150-$400 per day but the price points on Style Lend makes renting more appealing, so I will definitely start renting on Style Lend. I have some great item’s available for rent now up on the app!

Shopping habits (do you shop online, flash sales, in person, etc.)

I love clothes so I view shopping as an experience. I need to be there in person to feel the fabric, see the cut of the garment, try it on and feel the fabric against my skin. Online shopping takes the enjoyment out of the experience so I always shop in stores. Plus I’m an instant gratification kind of girl. I WANT IT NOW!!! I can’t wait for it to come in the mail.

StyleLend_0929__MG_0165_v1_s

Favorite brands/designers and why?

Dior, Chanel, Lavin, Balmain, Missoni, Hermes, Giles and Mary Katrantzou. Dior and Chanel for it’s like appeal, Lanvin for its sophisticated style, Balmain, Mary Katrantzou, and Missoni for prints, color and design (go Balmain Army!), Hermes (I own three Birkins) Giles because of his artistic couture.

What is your favorite thing to do in NY?

Walking. It sounds crazy, but you really get to discover places and things you never would have paid attention to. Especially if you’re riding  the subway or in a taxi on your phone. Walking around the city makes me appreciate the city’s beauty, the people, the architecture, sounds (yes even the loud honking and fire trucks!). Sometimes I’ll walk from Soho to Midtown and discover new stores (more shopping!) or watch as a film is being produced (I was even asked to be an extra one day just because I happen to be walking at the right place at the right time) so walking anywhere in NY is my favorite activity.

Can you tell us a little blurb about your background, job, and how long you’ve lived here?

I was raised in a family of very strong and talented women, born and bred in Spanish Harlem and the Upper East Side. My mother, grandmother and aunt were all fashionistas who passed the touch down to me. My aunt used to sew clothes for me and my family by hand, because she was unimpressed with the quality of garments sold in stores. My grandmother mended a lot of my clothing when they needed repair, and my mother had me sewing when I was 4 years old. I cut my first Vogue pattern at 4 yrs old (what sane mother allows her child to cut patterns let alone with sharp fabric sheers at 4 years old!?) I would help my mother cut, sew and design garments she’d custom make for clients, family and friends. I also designed and sewed my own senior ball dress in High School because I didn’t want to look like anyone else.

In my teens, when I started print modeling, I’d always mouth off to the stylist suggesting to style items differently than what they had decided. My agent then called me into her office and said “You need to let the stylist do their job and keep your mouth shut.” So I said to my self, “if I feel like I know more about styling than the stylist on set, then why don’t I become one?”
After I had that revelation, I started styling test shoots for model friends of mine in NYC and have been the fashion industry in NY for about 15 years and styling professionally for about eight years.

What is your fav styling assignment you’ve had?

Styling LA Reid for the cover of Social Life Magazine. He is so amazing and very humble.
StyleLend_0929__MG_0177_v1_s

What so you love most about being a stylist?

Creating and styling images that will inspire the next generation of stylists and push their creativity to the limits. I also love traveling to exotic locations for work. Who wouldn’t love to get paid to make people look beautiful in a beautiful location?
StyleLend_0929__MG_0192_v1_s

How would you describe your style?

“Changing.” I don’t follow trends at all because I love to embrace my individual style, not one manufactured by someone else. My motto is “Be the trend you would want to follow!” If there’s a trend that you embrace, make it your own. Don’t blindly follow trends because someone else says so.

Meet Jessica Kate–Style Lend’s OG!

Jessica_2015.06.13-0207_v4

beautiful, classy, and intelligent

Say hello to our Renter of the Month, San Francisco’s Jessica Kate! OG is an accurate nickname as Jessica started renting from Style Lend from the very start. Literally, out of our CEO Lona’s closet. 😉

We love her because her intelligence and beauty are equally on par. For the last 8 years, this stylish girl has worked as a psychotherapist.

Jessica recently showed us her gorgeous apartment in the center of Pacific Heights. With stunning views of the golden gate, and an adorable balcony where she has her morning coffee, we couldn’t stop taking photos. Her decor is a mix of Vogue/Restoration Hardware.

Take a peek into her home and see which Style Lend pieces are her favorites to rent.

WHERE DID YOU GET INSPIRATION FOR DECORATING YOUR HOUSE?

I like simplicity with a few pieces that stand out. I prefer neutral colors and hues. I wanted to contrast the old world San Franciscan architecture of my apartment with modern, contemporary furniture/pieces and use artwork to bring in sparks of color.

“let fashion be an extension of yourself” – jessica

Jessica_2015.06.13-0183_v1

when did you start renting from style lend and why?

I began renting from Style Lend during it’s early days – basically as soon as I found out about it – I loved the idea that it was local, easily accessible and the renting options were very compelling….after my first rental, I was hooked and have been since.

shopping habits?

I don’t always plan shopping – it often “just happens” however my go to’s are Net-o-Porter, Revolve, ShopBop.

favorite brand/designers?

I love Vince for day to day wear – simple/clean looks.

Frame denim is my new favorite for jeans – the fit is amazing, I especially love their distressed denim.

I love Valentino shoes, more of an edge – I just recently purchased the Valentino Rockstud pumps (for rent on our app), in love with them. I’m also a big fan of Chloe and Stella McCartney.

Jessica_2015.06.13-0137_v1

what are events you like to go to?

I travel quite a bit, lots of weekend getaways – Laguna beach, NY, Napa. I attend a variety of events- park days at Mission Dolores to music festivals to galas. In the last 1.5 yrs, I’ve rented dresses/pieces for Art Basel in Miami, Hawaiian vacations, weddings in Steamboat Springs Colorado and Sayulita, Mexico, NY Fashion Week and NYE in SF.

Jessica_2015.06.13-0172_v1

Jessica_2015.06.13-0195_v1

WHY DO YOU LIKE LIVING IN SF?

I love how SF/Bay Area has a bit of everything within reach – mountains, ocean, snow, beaches. I love how each district offers something unique and entirely different than its neighboring area. Great food, dynamic people, fashion and culture.

What would be your “dream item” to rent on style lend?

My dream items are often the designer dresses that I wouldn’t necessarily buy but would love to wear, and certainly rent to wear! I also love the idea of renting jewelry for the same reason.

Jessica_2015.06.13-0056_v2

Jessica_2015.06.13-0075_v1

why do you like the concept of renting vs. buying?

I like the concept of renting vs buying, particularly for dresses, because often you want to wear something new or that you haven’t worn yet and renting allows you to do so in a way that’s easy, accessible and affordable!
