Fashion & Sustainability

“It is our goal to raise awareness around the impact fashion has on the environment and at the same time offer sustainable solutions and choices. It is our mission to lead and inspire a sustainable way to be fashionable.”– Reformation

r7

It’s Earth Day this friday!  You know that we here at Style Lend love the earth, and are extremely passionate about responsible and sustainable fashion (check out why our CEO, Lona, decided to start a business for renting clothes here).

Reformation incorporates fashionable clothing with sustainability, and that’s why it’s one of our favorite brands.  Next to renting, it’s probably one of the most responsible fashion choices you could make.  We’ll let them explain:

“We source sustainable fabrics and vintage garments, and incorporate sustainable practices throughout our supply chain to make beautiful styles at a fraction of the environmental impact generated by most fashion brands. From our heat-reflecting roof and use of renewable energy, to the recycled hangers in our stores and 100% recycled packaging for every order shipped, sustainability is core to our business at every level.”

So in honor of our Earth day appreciation, we dedicate this blog post to you, Reformation! Here are some of our favorite pieces we have available to rent on Style Lend.

r1

We adore this Reformation Lucielle dress. It is a long chiffon wrap gown with lunging neckline and a tie waist so they can fit just right, plus it is sourced via sustainable fabric and vintage garments. (And you can rent it for only $40!)

r2

We love that this halter dress can easily be taken from day time casual to night time glam!  Rent it for $28/week.

r5

This grey ombre dress ($30/week) is absolutely perfect for a day in the park, or a backyard picnic.

r6

The Henry dress has a boho-chic and playful vibe that make it perfect for any music festival, just throw on a flower crown and you’re good to go!  Rent it for only $40/week.

r4

Who says sustainabililty can’t be edgy? The Zinc Skirt is an A-line leather mini skirt with a high fitted waist and hidden zip closure in the back, and is available to rent for only $27/week.

r3

The Ventura Skirt is a medium weight textured woven, midi A-line skirt with a high waist, side pockets and a button-down front with a slit.  At only $20/week it’s perfect for every occasion!

We love this brand and we know you will too!  Check out all of our Reformation items we have on both our website and app!

When did you start renting/lending from Style Lend and why?

I started renting and lending on Style Lend because it’s the perfect solution for the woman who’s always out and about at events and functions. I can feel fabulous in a new dress for each event without breaking the bank and harming the environment. I can access brands that would normally cost too much to own. And with lending my items, instead of having my accessories collect dust, I can earn money without any hassle.

Shopping habits (do you shop online, flash sales, in person, etc.)

I enjoy both shopping online and in person. I love shopping for other people.

Favorite brands/designers and why?

I adore Club Monaco because the stores are so pretty and I feel happy every time I walk in. I splurge on accessories and shop at stores like Aritzia, Rag and Bone and Zara for clothes. You can usually find me in my Nike Sky High Dunks in the day, and then a pair of heels at night. I’m known to mix my sneakers with dresses.

What are your favorite things to do in NY?

Having a coffee with great company or reading/writing in a cafe is my favorite thing to do. I love to bike around the city, host dinner parties, play ping pong and hang out at SPiN, dance and I’m also obsessed with book stores and psychics.

IMG_3165

Can you tell us a little blurb about your background, job, and how long you’ve lived here?

By day, I’m the Chief Marketing Officer of SPiN, a ping pong social club that was co-founded by Susan Sarandon seven years ago. By night, I am a relationship columnist.  I have an online magazine http://www.JustMyType.ca where I study the psychology behind lust, love and desire. My work has been referred to as “a scientific approach to that of Carrie Bradshaw”. I’ll take it. =)

I’m from Vancouver, Canada originally and I’ve been in NYC for two years. In my former life, I was a luxury hotel reviewer and was immersed in the luxury hospitality industry in both marketing and PR.

What is your fav styling undertaking? Maybe burning man?

Burning Man! I love how creative you can get with the outfits. Last year was my first year and my home became a costume factory! I had different looks for day and night, whatever my mood matched, I had a cool outfit to go with it.

(For anyone who doesn’t know, Burning Man is an annual gathering that takes place at Black Rock City, Nevada.)

What do you love most about being a relationship coach?

I feel that by understanding more about the psychology and science behind why we behave and feel the way when it comes to love, we can have healthier relationships with ourselves and consequently, with other people. A broken heart is like a weapon – if you leave it wounded, you only continue to hurt others and inflict pain. Hurt people hurt people. If I can help even one person, feel a little less alone, a little more understood in the matters of the heart, to me, that is success. I’ve had mothers email me to thank me for helping their daughter’s self-esteem, I’ve had countless people reach out to tell me how my words made them feel less shame and less alone. That is such a gratifying feeling.

How would you describe your style?

My style can be best described as feminine, sophisticated with a touch of edginess. I’ll take any chance to wear a dress because that’s when I feel the most beautiful. My style doesn’t take a lot of effort, I throw on whatever fits my mood. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what you’re wearing or what label you’re sporting, style comes down to how you carry yourself.

One thing that would be your “dream item” to rent on Style Lend?

My dream item to rent would be a dress from Valentino or Jason Wu.

Why do you like the concept of renting vs. buying?

I like the concept of renting because you can save money, you save the environment, you always feel like you’re getting something new and you don’t have to feel the guilt about wasting so much money on clothes you’d only wear a handful of times.

Play with Pastels

It’s almost inevitable: when you think about spring, you think pastels.  This spring is no exception because once again, dainty pastel colors are a major trend.  But even after all this time, they still feel fresh, and always have the power to make you feel pretty and feminine.

Keep reading to get some pastel inspiration to lighten up your style.

Hair

We just HAVE to mention pastel hair.  It seems to be all the rage nowadays, and while it’s definitely one of the more complicated ways to add pastels into your style, it’s just so fun!  It takes the feminine pastel and turns it into something edgy and non-conservative.

Clothes

Incorporating pastel into your wardrobe is definitely a faster, easier way to try this trend. Try vamping it up with some prints or keep it cool and chic by mixing different colors together.  Here are some of our favorite pieces!

Pink

Blue

Purple

Floral Pastels

Feminine Accessories

Then of course theres the easiest way of all: add some pastel accessories!  You can go ultra-feminine and mix and match these with other pastels, or pair it with a darker ensemble to lighten the look.

We love pastels for spring and we know you will too.  Check out our website and app to rent all of these items and much more!

The Green Fashionista

Earth Day– The birthday of the environmental movement that started back in the 1970’s. It’s a day where we reflect mindfully on our consumption, seek more environmentally friendly practices, and realize the value and importance of caring for our environment. After all, we have to live in it.

What does fashion and Earth Day have in common?

First, let’s start with this. How many items in your wardrobe collection have sat unused over the past year? Approximately 30% of the average American’s closet has not been worn in the past year.

You don’t have to convert to the lifestyle of a hippie to be more green. There’s small changes that you and I could easily make to our everyday lives to help mother nature out. That means less fast fashion, and smarter fashion purchases.

One of the easiest ways to be more green is to limit the amount of clothing we buy. Say what?!? According to the National Resources Defense Council, “textile-making is one of the most polluting industries in the world.” China seems to be the biggest culprit, accounting for over half of all the clothing that Americans buy, which the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates to be at $1700 per household annually.

Here are some stats:
• China disposes of nearly 3 billion tons of soot each year related to textile making
• Water discharge from textile mills is over 2.5 billion tons per year.
• Millions of tons of unused fabric at Chinese mills go to waste each year when dyed the wrong color according to the National Resources Defense Council

At Style Lend we think this should change! By no means are we suggesting to give up shopping, after all, it’s what we do best. Style is indicative of how we feel and how we want others to perceive us, the annihilation of shopping makes self-expression in the way we dress obsolete. There’s a more green way to shop, and it’s 100% eco friendly, it comes in the form of lending and renting.

Some smarter shopping stats:
• Renting allows you, the consumer to drastically reduce the amount of waste that these textile mills create on an annual basis.
• Renting allows you to change your style as often as you want.
• Renting allows you to the freedom to “shop” as much as you want.
• Lending allows you to put that 30% of your closet back to use.
• Lending allows you to be more green not just in the environmental way but in cash form as well.

StyleLend_Apr16_20

Renting & Lending is something that we could all easily do and it has the power to drastically reduce the waste and pollution that comes along with clothing production. You don’t have to make big lifestyle changes to impact the environment, sometimes small steps can go long ways.
